By aligning sustainability with profitability, Sue’s initiative sets a new standard for the industry, inspiring others to follow suit and make a lasting positive impact.
As this is a whole new subject for many operators, Sue can help initially by coaching the senior team, as to the how and the why we need to go on this journey and then subsequently deliver training for whole teams, to help establish the culture of sustainability into hotel operations.
Beyond this Sue can support business to help them towards achieving a robust accreditation in this field. This will become a business imperative in the very near future.

“Sue’s visit to the Torridon was instrumental not only in creating ‘buy-in’ from the team, but also given us the tools to move forward with our journey to Earthcheck accreditation. Sue eloquently and simply outlined the why, inciting a desire amongst the team to make changes and then followed this up with practical advice and training on how to progress in our journey to being a more sustainable operation.”

Whilst General Manager at Whatley Manor through her leadership, the hotel made significant strides towards Net Zero, arriving at a point, where today they hold a Silver certification from EarthCheck, a testament to her leadership and the teams commitment to environmental responsibility. Whatley is now a low carbon business, this is evidenced by the EarthCheck process which requires data measurement, transparency and external auditing.
Having walked in your footsteps; juggling hotel operations whilst transitioning to a low carbon business, there is a full understanding of the operational challenges that may stand in the way of your progress. None of which should deter you from aiming high in your ambitions to reduce the negative impact of your business on the environment.
At the annual AA Hospitality Awards 2024 Sue was honoured with the Award for Outstanding Contribution, a well-deserved recognition of her dedication to fostering positive change in the hospitality industry.
Expressing her delight, Sue said, “I love surprises, and for sure this news has come out of the blue, I am over the moon. When you plug away at your craft for all these years, you hope to make a difference, and receiving an award like this makes you believe that perhaps you have contributed something worthwhile.”
Sue has built her knowledge over time and early on joined the Cambridge Institute of Sustainable Leadership completing their course on Businesses transitioning to Net Zero Emissions. It was a great platform from which to build. She believes we all need to educate ourselves on all things Environmental, Social and Community , to help lead our teams on this subject and to help fore stall the risks that lie ahead. Starting this new chapter now, Sue aims to collaborate and influence others in industry to help drive action.
Sue is very proud to be an EarthCheck Ambassador.
